Inspired and Achieved!
June 15, 2018
Such a phenomenal Friday at Rhondda Housing Association last week. We had the proud task of meeting with a wonderful young local gentleman who has engaged with us through the Careers Wales Inspire 2 Achieve programme.
Inspire 2 Achieve is a programme run by Careers Wales in conjunction with local employers and aims to ensure that young people most at risk are identified and supported so that they remain in education, employment or training and their risk is reduced. This then reduces the likelihood of future or continuing poverty amongst young people plus improved health and well-being. Alongside instilling the importance a focussed work ethic and higher aspirations overall for their futures.
We met Tyler in late 2017 and at that time he was not engaging well with school, not enjoying it and missing lessons. By working with the specialists at Careers Wales, the Tyler was able to explain what he did enjoy doing and what his ambitions could be if he were encouraged and supported. So by working together we then organised placed with Flair our contractors and Tyler undertook a vast range of experience in our properties as part of a sub-contacting team. He worked really hard, and experience in painting, decorating and other tasks which he really enjoyed. With support from Careers Wales, Tyler agreed he would attend school more regularly and attempt his exams in order to continue and progress even further. He has secured a place in college to gain formal qualifications to forge a strong career path and has been offered employment with Flair who he worked with which will fit in around his studies.
Today has just completed his last school exam and then visited us in our offices to be formally rewarded by our Director of Housing Services with a special award for successfully completing the Inspire 2 Achieve programme. It was incredibly moving and truly inspirational to see how far this young gentleman has come in such a short time. His mother attended with him, and told us all how proud she is of him, and how much of a positive change she has seen at home.
We are really excited about our partnership and hope to help a lot more young people and young tenants who are struggling to engage in school.
Sincere thanks to everyone involved.
