Ex-Pupils Head Back To School

Posted on by Gavin Holley

Local residents and pupils from the old Graig Y Wion School took part in a special visit to the recently developed new homes in the Graig in Pontypridd.

The special visitors included the caretaker of twenty three years, Mrs Joyce Lewis, and two ex-pupils from the school, My Ray Cockram and Mr Winstone Gough. Mr Gough was a pupil at the infant’s school and his son in law was a head master so showing them around this impressive scheme was something very special indeed.

The former Victorian primary school was first opened in 1875 and was initially called Graig Infants changing its name to Graig Y Wion in 1953.  It eventually closed in 2005 with all the children being transferred to another local school, Parc Lewis Primary. Since the school closed in 2005 the site had fallen into a sorry state and the buildings were subject to extensive vandalism and arson attacks. Local residents welcomed the new homes to their neighbourhood and thanked Jehu Construction for their care and consideration during the build.
