Get Online Week & Digital Champions

Posted on by Nigel

We are celebrating Get Online Week with our fantastic partners from Phoenix Initiative & the great staff and partners involved in Digital Fridays & Getting RCT Online.

Get Online Week 2018 takes place from 15th to 21st October and this year. Since 2007, Get Online Week has reached more than 500,000 people across the UK, and aims to help them take their first steps to do more online. The work we do with our tenants and communities at our Tea, Talk and Tech sessions wouldn’t be possible without the support of the community interest company Phoenix Initiative. They are just some of the phenomenal digital champions in RCT who support those who are digitally excluded to get online and open up a whole new world.

Our tenant Paul became involved after receiving a flyer about a computer class organised.   He was low in confidence but pushed himself to go as he was looking for something to do after retiring from his job because of ill health. Prior to this he had little experience of using a computer and certainly wasn’t confident enough to do so without any support or guidance. He met and immediately formed a bond with the digital champions from Phoenix Initiative and completely threw himself in to the classes and from that point onwards, he never missed a session and visibly grew in confidence.  As he became more experienced at using online services he felt much more empowered and independent and he even followed up with his passion for travelling by using it to book trips around the world!

If you have never been on the internet before or you need help to do something on your computer, tablet or phone come along to a Digital Friday near you.  They can help get you started; show you how to use things like Skype and staying safe online and are held every week between 10am-12pm on a Friday at a location near you:
